I got this book after listening to the Storytelling Podcast which the writers do on YouTube. They had been talking a lot about Realm Keepers and I had to find out what all the fuss was about.To start with, this book is not without some issues. The style seems younger than YA, reading more like Narnia as I said above, which I would consider preteen (At least that's when I read Narnia). Or maybe the first Harry Potter. That's not a major negative, but it's something to keep in mind if you're expecting a book pitched for an older audience. This is apparent mostly in the language used and the handling of a battle scene.
The second issue I had was the large amount of exposition. We get introduced to the main character and her school life in quite a lot of detail. Once that's done, we're whisked to Midrealm where there's a lot more exposition. I think most of it was necessary, but it does slow the pace to a crawl for a large percentage of the book.
So why did I give it 5 stars? Well, my rating crept up significantly the further into the book I got. I am a fan of fantasy in general and I do like the alternate dimension books like Narnia, Piers Anthony's Phase series, etc. Once the actual action got going, there was a significant bump in interest on my part. As this is the first episode in a series, I'm guessing that the exposition is now done and we can get to the real core of the story.
The setting is interesting and fresh. I'll be very interested to read future installments to find out just what's going on.
I'd recommend this book, with the caveat that you have to give it a good 60% before it starts to pick up. Once it does pick up, however, it is a very good read.

This fun adventure is the first segment in a larger story and thus gives the reader a chance to sample the work and see if they're interested in continuing on with it.
For those familiar with John Hughes' The Breakfast Club, imagine those characters mysteriously being dragged to an alternate universe with magic where there are hoards of bad guys trying to kill legions of good guys... possibly because the bad guys wear black, and the good guys are all in bright gleaming armour. Maybe the brightness offends the eyes of the shadow people.
It's FULL of cliches. Everything about it is cliched. But it was well written and enjoyable. I don't know yet if I'll continue on with the series... I might pick up the second episode to see if it starts to distinguish itself as something different, but I won't get the full book yet.
This is not the first work I've read by Messrs. Bolger & Robinson, but it is the first joint effort of theirs I've read. I consider myself pretty well-read in fantasy of all sorts, and I really enjoyed reading this. The review by Mr. Ray Nicholson is an excellent review, and I agree with it whole-heartedly, with some personal augmentations.
The pace of this book was understandably hurried. An introductory work to a (promised) series, there is -- obviously -- need to quickly introduce characters, situations, history and worlds. The last 20 pages of this book showed the authors can adroitly change gears, and bring a laser focus on a single moment, and showed that the pulp will be shed.
The writing was extremely accessible. For a joint effort, the narrative voice was clear and straightforward, and very easy to follow. I enjoyed the main character's clear-minded voice throughout.
I think the characters will expand nicely, and I look forward to seeing their interactions as a group and with one another as the story continues, I think they've got a very interesting cast of complementary roles and personalities.
I really enjoyed reading this, I would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in a relatively short, fast read. It is a series that has immense potential, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
I read this book as a last chance of sorts to the genre of YA. Despite being of the age group YA is marketed to, recently I've begun to feel most YA is unrealistic and frankly an insult to the young adult population. This book however is softening my take no prisoners view toward the genre. I realize now that if written properly, young adult fiction can hook you until the last word, dragging you along(not too unwillingly) to the finish line.
The moment I opened the ebook, I took to the layout. Having read many self published works, I can tell when an author has put time and effort into making their work as sharp and clean as possible for publishing, and the authors of this book definitely took the time to perfect it's look. This enhanced the story for me, as it wasn't distracting. Inviting, without shoving the fact that it was awesome in my face. I like that.
But looks do not make a book, and I am all too aware of this. The actual story held my interest captive in it's palm, refusing to let me go. I went from saying "I'll read one chapter," to "one more," and then half, and before I knew it I had reached the end, and it was 2am. What?
I won't lie and say the book presents teenage life in a new way. Some parts such as the nerdy girl crushing hard on the most popular boy in school, are basic and made me roll my eyes. But the thing is, the way it's presented, it made me not care. Garrett Robinson and Z.C.Bolger managed to take character types I was all too familiar with--nerdy girl and jocks, goth kid, the bad boy, comic book nerd, shy girl, track star--and make me not care that I'd read about them before. Made me stay interested. And for that I say I'm impressed, because if I don't like a book, I stop. No questions, and few chances. I kept going. And going. And I'm moving on to the next episode.
The fantasy elements and humor really kept this book fresh. They are what set it apart. It was hilarious to watch the different reactions from the characters, and the fantasy world didn't seem unbelievable or static. I could picture things in my mind like a movie, and no explanation seemed "convenient." It all made sense, and was easy to swallow. More than a few times I found myself laughing out loud. And turning the page. And the end keeps you wanting more without being frustrated. I'm now a fan of both these authors. I want to know what happens next. On to the next episode for me, and I highly suggest you check this book out. It's a rare find.
